His career began in 1993, at the age of 11, when he was discovered by Bryan “Birdman” Williams and joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo The B.G.’z, alongside fellow New Orleans-based rapper B.G.
In 1996, Lil Wayne joined the southern hip hop group Hot Boys, with his Cash Money, label-mates Juvenile, Young Turk and Lil Doogie. Hot Boys debuted with Get It How U Live! that year. His father, Dwayne Michael Turner Sr. was a local, also known as Tune, and his mother, Jacida Carter, was a working professional, and Wayne’s father was not in the picture. Wayne started rapping when he was 8 years old, influenced by the likes of Tupac, Scarface and the Pharcyde. When Wayne was 9, he met Bryan “Birdman” Williams and joined his Cash Money Records. For the first few years of his life, Wayne’s mother raised him in the impoverished Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans with her brother, Ronald “Slim” Williams, who later teamed up with Birdman and founded Cash Money Records. He collaborated with the group known as “The Hot Boys” and Mr. Serv-On. With their help, he released his record ‘Tha Block is Hot’, at the end of the year 1999, which was extremely successful, peaking at the number three slot in Billboard 200 Charts, and was certified platinum. He then went on and released five of the most successful studio albums of his career, the last two being sponsored by the rapper Jay-Z, who had become his mentor. He remains one of the biggest names in the hip-hop industry, with collaborations with numerous artists. He has also ventured into acting, appearing in the movie ‘The Carter’ and his own MTV series, ‘The Carter’.
