Depending on the brand and model, a gas boiler’s interior will reveal a large, flat tank that may be red or grey in colour and situated near the boiler’s back. You experience water expansion each time the boiler begins to heat up your water or central heating.

Today’s high-efficiency boilers frequently operate at high pressure, which essentially means that the entire heating and hot water system is pressurised and is referred to as a sealed system. Through the incoming water mains, the system is filled with water to a pressure of around 1.2 bar. Regularly topping off the system pressure is a sign that there is a problem if it happens frequently. Maintaining the pressure constantly is bad for the boiler, therefore a boiler service includes checking to see whether the pressure has been dropping and determining the cause. Every pressurised, sealed heating system has an expansion vessel installed; some of them are installed externally adjacent to the boiler, but most are installed internally.


The expansion vessel comes into play at this point, absorbing the expansion as the water warms up. The vessel absorbs the expansion like a big sponge. It is pressurised and calibrated to the appropriate pressure for the boiler at the manufacturer. Another crucial component of boiler service is the periodic resetting of the vessel, which will eventually become deflated. If an expansion vessel is malfunctioning, your boiler pressure may keep dropping, and if it is not fixed, you may need to replace the boiler.
