Carova NC is home to one of the most impressive beaches on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. It boasts 13 acres of untouched beaches and maritime forest. Because it remains untouched, it is accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Carova is a cluster of communities with roughly 200 to 300 year-round residents. The population increases in summer as thousands of visitors flock to the area. Even with its popularity, Carova remains unpopulated.

Carova is well-known for its resident Spanish Mustang herd. Known as the Corolla wild horses, they freely roam the beaches and the communities.

While Carova may seem like a quiet region for some, there are several things you can do there. Read on to find out what you can do in this quaint community.

Fishing on the Outer Banks

Before Carova became famous with summer tourists, it was already one of the best fishing destinations on the East Coast. Anglers and fishermen from across the country visited Carova for exceptional fishing.

If you like fishing, try the different fishing activities Carova offers such as charter fishing, surf fishing, pier fishing, and kayak fishing. You can even join Outer Banks fishing tournaments. These events offer big prizes and bonus souvenirs for participants.

Stand-up Paddle Boarding

Stand-up paddle boarding is another must-do activity in Carova. It is one of the newest crazes on the Outer Banks that newcomers and water enthusiasts love.

You can launch from the oceanfront water to go paddle-boarding. If you are a beginner, use the sound waters on the Outer Banks. You can explore several launching points and areas that suit your paddle-boarding skills.

As for the equipment for paddle boarding, purchase or rent them from one of the local water sports shops on the Outer Banks. You can also take lessons provided to beginners.

Fun Beach Activities for Kids

Carova offers various activities for vacationing kids in the Outer Banks. You can take them to the children’s museum, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, and of course, on Corolla wild horse tours.

Kids can also enjoy stand-up paddle boarding, windsurfing, kayaking, and kiteboarding. They can take up lessons and rent equipment to enjoy water activities.

See Spanish Mustang Horses in Carova

When you are in the Outer Banks, it is natural that the Corolla wild horses will be on your list of things to see. You can book a horse tour that features guided visits around Carova.

If you prefer driving to see the famed herd, you must bring a four-wheel drive vehicle because you will be manuevering the sand. Get a beach parking permit from Currituck County beforehand if you want to park along the beach. Always remember that it is against the law to feed the horses. The county also mandates tourists to stay at least 50 feet away from the wild horses.

Final Thoughts

Carova may seem like an isolated place, but there is a lot you can do while vacationing here. You might be surprised to find plenty of restaurants and beach homes. These are more reasons to plan for a Carova getaway.
